Tax and Business Consultants
The Watson CPA Group is not a group of tax preparers or number crunchers- we are tax and business consultants and our firm will take you through the cycles of your personal and business lives. Many accountants are only compliance oriented, and while IRS compliance is critical, being proactive is equally important.
Not every business runs the same or has the same needs. We want to ask the appropriate questions, listen, and develop a game plan that works for you. Topics such as entity structure, health insurance, retirement planning, executive fringe benefits, 401k and profit sharing plans, educational assistance programs, health reimbursement arrangements and accountable plans are just some of the areas that define the form and function of today’s business. Square pegs don’t go in round holes- we’ll find the right solution for you and your business.
Moreover, our goal at the Watson CPA Group is to always prepare comprehensive and accurate financial reports, filings and tax returns, but equally important is your understanding of how this stuff “works”. To the extent necessary, we want you to be comfortable with your tax and accounting world so together we can successfully plan for your future.
The Watson CPA Group also embraces technology by utilizing secure client portals and online submit forms to exchange documentation. However, we remain committed to direct delivery, face-to-face interactions and personal relationships with our clients. We are Colorado Springs CPAs but provide nationwide tax and accounting service, including small business consultation. While most of our clients are primarily in California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, the Midwest, Florida and New England, we serve business owners in all 50 states including Washington D.C.
Here is your Watson CPA Group team (what a good looking bunch!)-
Tina Watson, CPA, MBA, CFP
Tina Watson became a Certified Public Accountant in 2003. Tina has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Business Administration and consults with a variety of small businesses including Defense Contractors.
Tina takes pride in helping her client understand how the numbers come together. She believes that the extra time spent with a client illustrating the mathematical nuances helps everyone better understand their business.Tina also provides financial planning and investment strategies as the Principal of SFD Capital, a registered investment advisor firm. Tina manages Pod A.
As a mother of three and avid tennis player (4.5 baby!), Tina still finds time to enjoy traveling, exercise and the occasional moment of downtime (which is like a unicorn).
Jason is a small business consultant specializing in LLCs and S Corporations including entity structure, self-employment taxes and retirement planning. He is quick to point out that while some basics cover all situations, every business is truly unique. He is the author of Taxpayer’s Comprehensive Guide to LLCs and S Corps. Jason manages Pod B.
He is also a financial expert witness primarily in divorce matters, prepares business valuations and is a financial planner with SFD Capital, a registered investment advisor firm. Download CV here.
Jason was an airline pilot for 17 years and a BBA and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Amazing he made it out alive. He is also studying for the CPA exam (two down, two to go). To add to the fun, Jason also likes dirt biking, hiking the incline and cooling off with Ruby Red infused Whiskey mixed with diet sweet and sour (getting old stinks).
Sally Rhoades, CPA, CFP
Sally began her tax career in 1988 with Ernst and Young (never heard of them, are they big?) in Nashville and became a CPA licensed in Tennessee in 1989. For 10 years, she followed her Air Force husband all over the world and was a full-time mother of two and a volunteer at various Air Force tax assistance offices. She has lived in Belgium and Germany and has deep experience with expat and military residency issues. Sally joined Watson CPA Group in early 2014 and became a licensed CPA in Colorado.
In her spare time, she enjoys camping, tailgating at Air Force football games, and spending time with her two teenagers and husband.
Michelle Day, EA, CFE
Michelle began her career in the United States Air Force where she was a Command Lead and Manager of Computer Operations. From there she’s worked for a handful of tax and accounting firms culminating 25 years of cross-functional expertise in business consultation, financial analysis, strategic planning and tax preparation. Michelle and Sally co-manage Pod C (the Super Pod).
She is an Enrolled Agent with IRS and a Certified Fraud Examiner. She assists Jason in divorce litigation support and financial analysis. Instead of “show me the money” it becomes “where’d the money go?”
When she’s not a work, Michelle enjoys reading, spending time with her loved ones including her four-legged family member, cooking, watching movies, and dark chocolate.”
Lana retired from a long career full of accounting and finance for 35 years for a Colorado Springs defense contractor, and at one time was actually the boss of one of our CPAs (hint: not Brian)! She doesn’t let that go to her head though and continues to work for the Watson CPA Group as a Tax Senior preparing corporate and personal tax returns on Tina’s team (Pod A).
Lana’s passions in life include rescuing cats in her sanctuary (Yes, Tina and Jason were hustled into taking a massive cat named Mocha), remodeling her 70-year old home, swimming and spending time with her daughter and granddaughter.
Theresa Eggen, CPA
Theresa received her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from California Polytechnic State University in 1997. Yeah, she’s smart. She spent nearly 17 years as a California CPA primarily in San Luis Obispo. Theresa offers a unique skill set- she owned her own firm for over 7 years, but had to transition away when she and her family relocated to Colorado Springs. Her firm specialized in tax planning and business consultation.
As a former business owner she understands the wearing of multiple hats- IT, HR, marketing, etc. Theresa enjoys being “just” a CPA and is happy to be working alongside other tax professionals and business consultants. Theresa is a Tax Senior on Jason’s team (Pod B).
Tax Preparer, Business Consultant
Brian has recently graduated from UCCS with a double Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance. He is currently enrolled working on his Master’s degree. He has also passed all four parts of the CPA exam, and will have his certification once he completes the necessary hours (he can’t be that far off).
Brian joined the Watson CPA Group team as a business consultant, but willingly takes on any task he is handed. He enjoys navigating the complexities of setting up payroll accounts and assisting with reasonable salary recommendations for S Corp owners. Brian is a Tax Preparer on Tina’s team (Pod A).
In his spare time Brian enjoys reading, playing chess and has just jumped into the real estate market as the proud owner of a duplex.
Tax Preparer, Business Consultant
Trevor started preparing tax returns one summer to help his uncle out, and found that he actually enjoyed it! Since then Trevor has moved from California to New York to Colorado, each time building on his tax preparation skills. He started his own tax preparation business a few years ago, and has continued to build it while assisting other firms during tax season.
Trevor has been a seasonal tax preparer for Watson CPA Group for two years now. He enjoys researching unique tax situations and digging deep into the tax code (no, really) to find answers for clients.
In his time away from tax Trevor can be found (we hope) hiking or backpacking on some remote trail with his trusty sidekick Australian heeler Neka.
Keegan just completed his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from San Francisco State University (with an emphasis in Accounting, of course!). He has had a very unique career path but that diversity brings strength to his work product and what he can offer to our clients. A jack-of-all-trades to be sure, but definitely a master of accounting!
In his spare time, Keegan enjoys hiking and camping, so long as he’s not stuck at home working on one of his “vintage” cars. DMV records indicate he’s owned 58 vehicles over his lifetime!
Karen retired after 28 years as support staff in the education field at the high school level. Karen has worked for the Watson CPA Group for two tax seasons as an administrative assistant, and enjoyed it so much she decided to stay on part-time this year in the off-season – gives her a reason to get out of sweats twice a week!
In her free time she loves to play golf (as long as no one’s keeping score), reading a good crime or suspense novel, working in her yard and prowling around thrift stores for good finds. She has 2 grown daughters and 5 grandchildren ranging in ages from 10-17.
